Communist Recruitment of Youth
We have seen this epidemic of student radical organizations with a Marxist orientation on American campuses before. The National Student League, started in 1931, was a creature of the Communist Party and while a great many of its members were not Communists, it was constantly under Party domination. Existing simultaneously with the Young Communist League, it diverted attention from that organization, and when a student was compelled by the University administtrators to resign from the Young Communist League or leave the institution, he obliged by leaving the YCL and affiliating with the NSL. Celeste Strack was a National Student League official at UCLA in 1935 and was expelled because of her radical activities on the campus. She immediately became an open member of the Communist Party and later developed into one of its top officials. Max Weiss was a leader of the National Student League in New York City College in 1931, and Joseph Starobin played a similar role at Columbia University in the same year. Both later became prominent functionaries in the American Communist Party.

Another youth organization that was captured by the Communists almost at its inception in 1934 was the American Youth Congress, a successor to the American Student Union. It was a lusty, Communist-oriented organization of the late '30's, and like the members of organizations now in operation at California institutions of higher learning, members of the National Student League and the Students League for Industrial Democracy left their classrooms at the University of California in Berkeley to aid the striking longshoremen during the San Francisco general strike

I live in Long Beach CA near San Pedro and Wilmington and would like to know the exact steps to take to get the process started to become a longshoreman or work on the waterfront.

My aunt and her husband are both longshoreman and I was wondering if that would help get me in? Her husband is full time and he got her in but she is still only part time and its been a few years. She still makes good money though. Would this up my chances of getting hired or is there some other way to do it?

I'm looking for a friend of mine and can't seem to find any info online. His full name is Addison Bradford Elliot and his hometown is San Pedro California. I met him when he came to work at UPS with me in Washington State. The last I heard, he was moving back to California in the hopes of becoming a Longshoreman like his parents. He's around 28 years old. Any help would be appreciated as I miss him very much.

So I have been motivated to write a novel about depression and the quality of life, the novel will have four main characters and their story, the first chapter explains what happens to the first character.

Also take note that this is a rough draft and is written as if it is for a short story, the original will be much more description and better edited.

The novel first begins with this paragraph:

Everybody dies in this novel. I assure you that my revealing of this to you wont spoil anything for you, as you already knew this. This novel is about the lives of four individuals suffering depression, loss, and loneliness. To start off the novel I would like you to think about this question; what is it that keeps you alive?

Chapter one - John

"I get it now John." Said the dock supervisor as John headed home,
"You want a raise don't you?"
John lifted his head quickly and looked his supervisor in the eyes, "What makes you think that?" He exclaimed.
"Don't play dumb with me John, fifteen years working here and only two weeks off, you want a raise don't you? Or perhaps you have been intending on taking my job? I've got kids to feed; I need this position!" Blurted the supervisor.
The supervisor was right, John had only missed two weeks off of work throughtout his entire career as a longshoremen, these two weeks were for his honeymoon; a year later his wife Megan had died in a car accident, after that day John had been keeping himself isolated from his family and friends; this made working his only routine besides eating and sleeping. John had became a very quiet man since the tragedy, he rarely showered nor changed his clothing, and hadn't shaved since the tragedy; this unclean appearence often caused people to mistake him for a homeless man.
"Taking your job from you has never been one of my intentions, Henry."
Henry looked at John in the eyes with an unsatisfied look on his face as he vaguely clenced his fists making John aware of the hostility beginning to emerge between the supervisor and him.
"I don't want any trouble, okay?" Explained John as he turned around and walked away.
John knew it wasn't over when he heard splashing behind him as Henry ran through the wet ground towards him. John turned around and crouched in an attempt to reduce the incoming damage. Henry took notice of this and kicked John's legs in to throw him off balance, John fell to ground with his face exposed, Henry pulled John from the ground by his beard with his left hand and repeatedly punched John's jaw and nose in with his right fist. John tried to let out a cry but was complicated by the excruciating pain Henry was putting him through.
Finally satisfied, Henry dropped John to the ground, pulled out a packet of Players, pressed one between his lips and lit it with a silver lighter. He pulled out his wallet and removed a twenty dollar bill from it.
"Get yourself a haircut you filthy dog." Ordered Henry as he dropped the bill on John's chest and walked away.
John lay on the ground for several minutes in both emotional and physical pain as he reviewed a flashback of an arguement he had with Megan the day she died. John had been convincing her not to go to a job interview, he told her that his job as a longshoremen would be enough for them to live a proper life and raise a family; and that she wouldn't need to work.
"We will do just fine." He told Megan with his arm blocking the doorway.
"Fine isn't enough for me John, I don't want my life to be fine." She argued.
"Honey my job pays very well, I want us to start a healthy and happy family, this wont be easy if you have a job."
"Is that what I am to you John? Your widow? Your servant? Is that why you married me John, to raise a family for you?" She excalimed.
"No Megan I want you to be happy, and that doesn't require more money." He told her.
"Money buys happiness John, you should know that by now!" Shouted Megan as she forcefully removed John's arm from the door and walked towards her car.

John picked up the twenty dollar bill and held it in front of him as he mumbled the words, "Money buys happiness". John placed the money into his right pocket and headed home on his bicycle.
John's home had not changed the slightest since the day his wife died, she was very picky about placement of furniture which bounded John from making any changes. John opened his front door and placed his bicyle in against the wall. He closed the door and headed to his room. When he arrived at his room he pulled out a thumbtack from the drawer next to his bed and used it to pin the twenty dollars from Henry on his bedroom wall. "Money buys happiness." He mumbled.
In pain john limped to his bathroom and opened the mirror cabinet. From it he took out a pair of sissors, and a razor blade. With those tools he gave himself a haircut and a shave, he looked back on memories of his father teaching him how to shave.
"Always shaved downwards." His father's voice told him.
The last
time John had seen his father was at Megan's funeral. John had avoided him since, along with the rest of his family and friends.
When john finished he washed the leftover shaving cream from his face and stared himself in the mirror.
His new appearence gave him just what he always feared it would; memories of his wife. This was the face which woke up to Megan laying their on his bed as he brushed his teeth and shaved, this was the face that Megan loved. John turned his head hoping to see Megan on his bed.
John felt his pain increasing so he pulled out a bottle of Aspirin from the bathroom drawer. He removed one capsule from the bottle, put it on his tongue and used his hands as a cup for water from the sink to help wash the pill down. John looked at himself in the mirror once more, after getting a final look at himself he pulled out a bottle of mouthwash from the drawer. Using the mouthwash to help swallow, John slowly downed every single aspirin in the bottle.
John lay there dead on t
dead on the floor. Defeated. Nobody took notice of his death for two weeks, until his neighbour got suspicious and contacted the police. In John's bedroom the police found thousands of paycheques and bills pinned on the wall, their was so much money that you couldn't tell what color the wall was without removing a bill or cheque. In John's pocket the police found a note which read,
"Money doesn't buy happiness."
The cops counted an estimate of almost two million dollars in the bedroom.
Looking over it again I see a ton of mistakes... Like I said this is the first draft and also I hadn't run it on Microsoft word so there is no spell check and I quickly wrote it.
More info:

I expect to name the novel "Finding Happiness"

It's about what makes life worth living and why you should cherish every moment of it, and when your down you need to get yourself back up. Not everyone of the 4 main characters in the book commits, suicide, one of them lives as he finds his happiness, he discovers he was looking in the wrong place the whole time. In the beginning I state "every character dies" which is true, we all die. Were all going to die someday, and the message of the book will go a lot deeper into this statement.

First he was rocking the 19th century factory worker's hat, now he's got the longshoreman's cap. I like that he's looking to see what he can do after his football career is over, god knows he could use the money!

Those press conferences can be mighty chilly!

She really does think she is black. She used to be a perfect "WASP" and since my father died now immitates Flo on "Good Times". Also, she now swears like a longshoreman. She can't tell me what happened 15 min ago, but can remember perfectly what happened 15 years ago. She has called the police on my brother for playing the TV at 7PM at low volume. She makes foul, catty remarks about every female that crosses her path. She has become an incurable gossip. When I allowed her to move in with me after my father died (briefly) she tried to starve my live-in because she is blind. She pulls the same tricks on my live-in that my grandmother (her MIL) pulled on her when she lived with us (calling her by my ex-wifes name when I'm not around, then by her proper maname when I am, things like that) and then denies it. Is she going senile or insane? Or has she just always been a bitch and now has nobody to regulate her behaviour? Pops did tell her alot to "stop making trouble". What's wrong?

Wondering how to apply for local 13 in long beach as a longshoremen? my brother is looking for a career as a longshoremen, but wondering how to apply.
